David left Art School and became a Graphic designer before starting a new career as a porter at Sotheby's in 1967. He worked in the Departments of Ceramics and Oriental Works of Art and was appointed a Director in 1976. He retired in 1999.

He has written The Price Guide to 19th and 20th Century British Pottery and the Guide to Understanding 19th and 20th Century British Porcelain. He is the Editor of Sotheby's Encyclopedia of Porcelain, co-editor of the companion Encyclopedia of Glass and General Editor of Readers Digest Treasures in Your Home. David regularly contributes chapters to other publications and writes frequently for a variety of magazines as well as holding the post of editor of Masterpiece magazine.

His face is familiar to us all - not only from his constant appearances on The Antiques Roadshow since the first series in 1979 but also from the numerous other radio and television programmes he makes.

David is a huge source of fascinating information about the antique world and he lectures on a wide range of topics in this country and abroad to audiences ranging from Business executives, antique societies, NADFAS and other groups.
