Mark Williams-Thomas

Bringing with him his wealth of experience as hands on former Detective, Mark Williams- Thomas is able to provide a new dimension to many of the criminological problems facing today's society – for example, how the police investigate major crime and the risk management of sex offenders in the community.” His expertise includes in particular risk management and assessment of offenders and he now owns his own Child Protection and Risk Management Consultancy - WT Associates Ltd. Prior to setting up WT Associates in 2005, Mark was a police Detective specialising in major crime. He worked on or was in charge of some of the largest paedophile and murder investigations in the country, as well as being was one of only 10 specialist Family Liaison officers during his time in the police. Mark is also completing a Masters in Criminology at the University of Central England.

In demand as a speaker, Mark shares his practical experience from his police service as a detective along with his academic work in criminology and the media, whether it is talking about major high profile criminal investigations, the release of sex offenders into the community or television police dramas, such as the BBC’s Waking the Dead and Inspector Lynley, ITV’s Heist and the BBC’s Special Cases and Hunter Gatherer.
Mark’s company has won the contract to look after the security and welfare of the Great Britain Team at the World Student Games in Thailand 8th - 18th August. This is a world class event and nearly all the athletes will be part of the GB Olympic bid in 2008, in Beijing.

The GB team are considered one of four countries that are high risk from a security point of view and taking there own security. Mark visited Thailand in early April 2007 to meet with the Authorities, the Embassy and the Police and undertake the risk assessments of the venues and Athletes Village.

This high profile event will be taking place in a country that has recently seen a Military Coup and where in the past year Al Qaeda suspects have been arrested form a cell operating in the country. The country has also seen a number of high profile bombs, the last being in December.

Alongside his expert contributions, specialist speeches and hosting of child protection conferences and seminars, Mark also has a general interest speech which is very popular.

Criminologist and former detective Mark Williams–Thomas advises the production teams behind many of the TV crime dramas and his delivery is peppered with humorous anecdotes as well as serious notes from some of the most high profile and major crime stories he has been involved with over the years.

The general public’s fascination with crime programmes has never been so strong - everyone likes to think of themselves as an armchair detective. The programmes themselves range from the soft whodunit drams of “Inspector Morse” and “PD James” to dark crime dramas of “Wire in The Blood” and “Waking the Dead” where modern day policing technique play a crucial role.

As a result of such demand for new crime dramas as well as new stories lines for existing shows Mark is kept very busy reading scripts and advising writers and producers. He is the police advisor for the award winning BBC1 crime drama ‘Waking the Dead’ and has just started working with a new set of writers on the latest series for broadcast in 2009. Other crime dramas who have used his expertise including “Inspector Lyndley Mysteries”, “Wire in the Blood” and “Murder Suppression Unit.”

One question Mark is constantly asked to comment on is if it is possible to get into the mind of a killer? Mark uses his comprehensive experience to provide an interesting insight into such a widely considered and debated idea.

In addition to bringing his experience to bear on crime dramas he also features regularly as a broadcaster and crime expert on the BBC, ITV, GMTV & Sky News contributing on such cases as the disappearances of Madeleine McCann, the serial killings last years in Ipswich, the Child Abuse investigation in Jersey and the ‘Constant dangers of the Internet’.

Mark’s speaks about all of his experiences and shares his unique approach to advising crime writers – helping them push the boundaries of reality whilst using modern day policing techniques and forensics to maintain a strong procedural practice. He also provides a fascinating insight behind the scenes of what makes many of today’ crime dramas so successful and why the likes of Inspector Mores, PD James and Chief Inspector Wexford stand the test of time.
